The Commonwealth Secretariat announced on Saturday that Amina Mohamed, Kenya’s former Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, will lead a Commonwealth election observer team to Dominica.
Ms Mohamed, President Uhuru Kenyatta’s first Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, will lead the Commonwealth Observer Group (COG) to the Caribbean country for elections slated for December 6, 2022, according to a statement. Ms Liberata Mulamula, Tanzania’s former Foreign Minister, will also be part of the team.
The Commonwealth Secretary General, Patricia Scotland, said Ms Mohamed will lead a five-member committee of observers to monitor the polls.
The observer delegation will arrive in Roseau, the Dominican capital, on November 30, 2022, and will remain “until the end of the electoral process,” according to the announcement.
They will be accompanied by a team from the Commonwealth Secretariat led by Ms Chantal Sciberras, Adviser and Head of Europe in the Governance and Peace Directorate, during their stay, which will see them deployed around the country.
This will be Ms Mohamed’s first public appearance since stepping down as Cabinet Secretary for Sports and Culture last month.
The observers are expected to be unbiased and to adhere to the norms of the Commonwealth Guidelines for Election Observation as well as the International Declaration of Principles for Election Observation, to which the Commonwealth is a signatory.
Amina Mohamed (Chairperson), Liberata Mulamula, Prof Praja Trivedi, Ian Hughes, and Wyvolyn Patterson make up the team.
