Kenya's Beatrice Chebet Shatters Women's 5km World Record in Barcelona

Kenyan athlete Beatrice Chebet has set a new milestone by breaking the women’s world 5km record at the Cursa dels Nassos road race in Barcelona.

At just 23 years old, Chebet blazed across the finish line in an astonishing 14 minutes and 13 seconds, surpassing Ethiopian Senbere Teferi’s women-only record by a remarkable 16 seconds.

Notably, Chebet’s feat also outpaced the women’s world record in a mixed race, previously held by Ethiopia’s Ejgayehu Taye at the 2021 Cursa dels Nassos, by an impressive six seconds. Taye, 23, secured the second position in this race, with Kenya’s Lilian Rengeruk, 26, finishing third.

This triumph marks the culmination of a stellar year for Chebet, who began by claiming the world cross-country title in Bathurst in February. Her achievements continued as she secured the inaugural world 5km title in Riga in October and clinched a bronze in the 5,000m at the World Championships in Budapest in August.

In the men’s race, 25-year-old Dominic Lobalu of South Sudan emerged victorious, adding to the event’s overall excitement.
