A student of Kenyatta University who survived a devastating road accident on Monday, recounted distressing moments during the crash that claimed the lives of 11 students and left many others injured.
According to the student (name withheld), the bus conveying 58 university students on an academic trip collided with a trailer when the driver tried to overtake another vehicle just after Mtito Andei.
“We were on a trip with our school. So, just after Mtito Andei, our driver was trying to overtake. The trailer came right at us and crashed into our bus from behind. Those who were seated in the rear were the ones who were hurt so badly in the accident,” he recounted to the Nation.
“For us, we had our seatbelts, but we were still thrown outside. My hand was injured in the process. My friend here sustained head injuries. It was raining heavily at the time of the accident, and now I don’t even know where some of my other friends are,” he added
The Kenyatta University student who miraculously escaped the accident with a fractured arm, said he lost consciousness after the crash and was only confronted with the sad reality of what happened when he came to.
“I do not remember much after the accident. When I regained consciousness I saw some of my friends were doing okay while others were not,” he explained.
The road crash between the school bus and the trailer happened on Monday, March 18 at Maungu area in Voi along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. Eleven students lost their lives while several others sustained severe injuries.
On Tuesday, at least 16 of the critically injured survivors were airlifted from Voi where they were receiving treatment to Nairobi for intensive medical attention.
