Jurgen Klopp has ventured into social media to ensure his amazing journey with Liverpool endures beyond his departure from the club after Sunday’s emotional farewell game against Wolves. Klopp’s remarkable nine-year tenure will conclude with the final whistle at Anfield.
The German tactician has cemented his status as a Liverpool legend, leading the team to their first Premier League title in 30 years in 2020. Under Klopp’s stewardship, the Reds also celebrated Champions League glory in 2019, in addition to lifting the FA Cup and the League Cup.
The charismatic 56-year-old enjoys a deep bond with Liverpudlians, who have embraced his passionate personality.
To maintain his connection with the city long after he leaves Merseyside, Klopp set aside his reservations about social media by launching his own Instagram account on Saturday.
Named ‘Kloppo’ and dubbing himself ‘the normal one’—a nod to Jose Mourinho’s special one’ moniker—the account attracted 400,000 followers within two hours of his debut post, a heartfelt video message to Liverpool fans.
“Dear Liverpudlians, we’re getting closer to the end. I would call it a love affair. From the first day, it was an absolutely incredible time,” Klopp said.
“I’ve wondered always that it feels like we write a story together, and that’s how it feels today. It’s a good book. And if we read it in the future, we will have a smile on our face.
“Leaving this incredible place is hard, but I want to stay in contact with you. And even when I’m not a social media guy, people told me social media helps with that. So, here we go. See you!”
The video featured memorable clips of Klopp’s iconic fist pumps, trophy celebrations, and press conference quips. Additionally, Klopp penned an open letter to the Liverpool Echo on Saturday, praising “the city with open arms” for welcoming him so warmly.
As his departure looms, Klopp has spent the past week bidding farewell to staff around Anfield and the club’s training ground. Liverpool’s players gave him their own send-off at a barbecue on Thursday, while Klopp was seen sitting alone in Anfield’s famous Kop stand, reflecting on past triumphs and near-misses.
When Klopp announced his decision to leave in January, Liverpool were chasing a quadruple. Though they won the League Cup final against Chelsea in February, their FA Cup and Europa League campaigns ended prematurely, and their Premier League title challenge faded, ensuring a third-place finish regardless of the result against Wolves.
Preparing for an undoubtedly emotional afternoon, Klopp admitted his final pre-match team meeting would be poignant. To mark the occasion, a special fan mosaic will be displayed as Klopp walks out of the tunnel before kick-off.
