Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expressed enthusiasm on Tuesday regarding his new position as head of global soccer at Red Bull while also rejecting any notion that this role could lead to a return to management in the near future. He was appointed last year and began his role in January.
“I finished at Liverpool seven months ago and made that decision deliberately. I acknowledged that I was no longer the right person for the job, but I never claimed I wouldn’t work again, and shortly after, this opportunity arose,” the German said during a press conference at the energy drinks company’s headquarters in Salzburg, Austria.
“I wanted to be involved in this, and now I realise more each day not only that I am thrilled but also that I can be quite beneficial.”
Klopp said he was pleased to step away from the everyday demands of club management after spending more than two decades in the dugout almost continuously.
The 57-year-old maintained that he had no plans to use his new role to eventually take on a coaching position at one of the Red Bull clubs, even though he didn’t completely rule out the idea of managing a team again at some point in the future.
“I will not be the coach of a Red Bull team, that is a definite commitment,” he stressed.
Bundesliga team RB Leipzig leads Red Bull’s footballing network in Klopp’s home nation, Germany and also includes Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer.
