The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), working alongside a multiagency team, recently intercepted two trucks carrying a total of 288 drums of uncustomed ethanol valued at approximately Sh15 million.
The seized shipment had a potential tax liability of Sh35 million. The trucks, which had their registration numbers obscured with foreign plates, were apprehended in Kimana, Loitoktok in Kajiado County and have been impounded at the Loitoktok border office.
The regulatory body is committed to fostering a level playing field for legitimate businesses to prosper and is urging the public to engage in lawful activities to avoid prosecution.
It’s estimated that KRA loses about Sh53 billion every quarter due to tax evasion, primarily from ongoing court cases.
Commissioner for Tax investigations and enforcements KRA says the money lost was primarily from cases already in court.
