The Ogun State Police Command disclosed on Wednesday that the command arrested an inmate of the Medium Security Correctional Centre, Kuje, Abuja, where ISWAP invaded the prison premises and freed several inmates, including Boko Haram members.
Yakubu Abdul Mumuni, a 28-year-old inmate of the Kuje prisons, was rearrested on Wednesday, according to a statement made in Abeokuta by the police public relations officer of the Ogun State Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi. According to the PPRO, “Upon the information, the Divisional Police Officer, Sango Ota Division, Superintendent of Police Saleh Dahiru, quickly mobilised his men and moved to the area where the convict was apprehended.
“He stated further that he was convicted by the Kogi State High Court for the offence of Conspiracy and Culpable Homicide and sent to Kuje correctional centre.”
Lanre Bankole, the commissioner of police in Ogun State, gave the State Criminal Investigation Department instructions to organize the prisoner’s urgent transfer to the Kuje facility.
The government’s ability to defend its citizens has been called into question by a spate of high-profile attacks, the latest of which being this one. A few hours earlier, in his native state of Katsina, bandits had ambushed President Muhammadu Buhari’s convoy. A mine site was assaulted by assailants less than a week prior, who killed roughly 40 security guards and kidnapped four Chinese nationals. And a month earlier, unidentified gunman in Ondo State’s church massacred about 40 attendees.
Given that it involves Boko Haram captives, the Kuje jailbreak; the fourth in this year, is probably the most important event for Nigeria, the Lake Chad Basin, and other regions. Terrorist assaults are on the rise in the area, particularly ones from ISWAP.
