France forward Kylian Mbappe won the 2022 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot award ahead of club teammate Lionel Messi after netting a hat-trick in the final match against Argentina on Sunday.
The 23-year-old France attacker finished the competition with eight goals in seven games.
Lionel Messi, who scored his sixth and seventh goals of the tournament in the match, finished one goal behind Mbappe.
Prior to their matchup on Sunday, the two players were deadlocked with five goals each, but Messi was the favourite to take home the Golden Boot because of his greater number of tournament assists.
However, Mbappe’s hat trick in the final game allowed him to surpass Messi and become just the second Frenchman in history to win the World Cup with the most goals.
Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals in six games at the 1958 competition, was the only other Frenchman to finish a World Cup with the most goals.
