The lack of accountability, particularly in African churches, has raised numerous unanswered queries.
Discussing this contentious issue, Katherine Obiang, the host of News Central TV’s Jasiri, highlighted a social media post by a Nigerian individual identified as Femi Adepoju.
He recounted an incident in which a church demonstrated transparency in its financial operations by releasing a detailed breakdown of the funds he contributed and how they were spent.
Offering their perspectives on this contentious issue were Jasiri hosts – Blessings Mosugu, Katherine Obiang, and Anee Icha.
According to Katherine, “If you collect money from congregants, you should be prepared to show what, show workings! That’s why I like this post by Femi Adepoju.”
” If we don’t demand to show workings, we will always be taken for granted.”
Regarding the church as a sanctuary where individuals seek solace, Katherine condemned certain pastors who divert church funds into their personal accounts— an action their followers often grumble about but lack the courage to challenge.
Anee Icha claimed that many religious leaders are narcissistic— a trait that leads to a lack of accountability. She mentioned that unchecked power corrupts most pastors and suggested that money only exposes a character concealed by poverty.
On the other hand, Blessings Mosugu pointed out that the issue of accountability extends beyond churches and includes the government. She emphasised that if the Nigerian government lacks accountability, we cannot solely focus on churches or demand transparency from places of worship.
Discussing the matter of tithing and other forms of giving, she expressed that one should not seek validation for contributions made voluntarily.
