The Lagos State House of Assembly has declared its steadfast backing for newly elected Speaker Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda in the face of resistance from the impeached former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.
A statement issued on Saturday by the Assembly’s spokesperson, Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode, affirmed that over two-thirds of the Assembly’s members stand by the decision to impeach Obasa on 13 January and elect Meranda as the new Speaker.
Olukayode emphasised that the Assembly is solidly united behind the new Speaker and assured the public that the House remains committed to defending its decision against any opposition.
Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached on allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office, has contested the legitimacy of his removal, claiming the process did not follow due parliamentary procedures. However, Olukayode refuted these claims, describing Obasa’s objections as “unwarranted and unparliamentary.”
“The position of the House remains the same, and nothing has changed” Olukayode stated, adding that all members were duly elected and empowered to make decisions, including the removal of principal officers. He urged Obasa to adopt a peaceful resolution rather than actions that could heat up the polity.
The impeachment of Obasa followed accusations of financial mismanagement raised by the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition. These included spending ₦17 billion on constructing the Assembly’s building gate and ₦200 million on a Thanksgiving service. Obasa has dismissed these allegations as baseless.
The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to good governance and peaceful coexistence, vowing to resist any attempt to destabilise Lagos. Olukayode reiterated that the majority of lawmakers remain united in their support for Speaker Meranda, who represents the Apapa I State Constituency.
