The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has denied allegations in a viral video suggesting it demolished a building at 1A Olubunmi Owa Street, Off Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, Eti-Osa, Lagos.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Assistant Director of Public Affairs, Mr Adu Adegoke, LASBCA’s General Manager, Mr Gbolahan Oki, clarified that the removal of an attachment to the property was carried out by the owner and not by the agency.
Mr Oki explained that the attachment was illegal, and its removal did not follow proper procedures or obtain the necessary permits. He described the video as misleading, stating it aimed to tarnish the agency’s reputation.
“The attention of the Lagos State Building Control Agency has been drawn to a misleading video circulating online regarding the removal of an illegal attachment to a building by the owner at 1A Olubunmi Owa Street, Lekki Phase 1,” Oki said.
“In line with the Lagos State Government’s commitment to urban regeneration and sustainable development, LASBCA instructed the owner of the illegal attachment to remove it after multiple notices.”
The General Manager revealed that the notices included warning, seal-off, and quit directives, all of which were served on the property owner.
LASBCA officials reportedly discovered the unauthorised demolition during a routine enforcement operation, where they faced resistance from some occupants of the property who had not adhered to building regulations.
Oki also addressed claims made in the video, highlighting that the individual shown obstructing agency officials admitted to receiving prior notices, contradicting the video’s narrative.
