Nigeria’s Works Minister David Umahi has said that the Independence Bridge in Lagos will be open to traffic again by 3 PM on Friday.
Speaking to reporters in Lagos on Thursday evening, Umahi reassured residents that repairs on the damaged part of the bridge would be finished, with follow-up inspections set for two weeks from now.
The bridge was shut down earlier this week for maintenance and repair—a closure that Umahi said he was not informed about. Olukorede Kesha, the federal controller of works in Lagos, said the closure would last until May.
The abrupt closure led to significant traffic jams, with many commuters arriving at their destinations early in the morning.

After public complaints about the severe traffic congestion on Wednesday, Umahi instructed that the bridge be reopened, adding that necessary repairs would be completed later.
“I would like to announce that those heading to work tomorrow can feel confident to use this route by 3 PM. This bridge will be reopened at the latest by 3 PM tomorrow, to the glory of God, and we are dedicated to working throughout the night to restore it.”
He added that about 50 percent of the intended work has been accomplished, indicating that “it might end up being permanent work.”
