The Lagos State Government has announced a new traffic enforcement initiative that will fine drivers caught overspeeding or violating red light signals.
Using newly installed cameras, drivers exceeding speed limits will face a fine of N50,000, while those running red lights will be fined N20,000.
The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with Huawei Technologies, deployed four Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to monitor traffic flow and detect violations.
These sites complement the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and other traffic management devices.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, explained that the speed-detecting sites are located at Alapere, Ogudu Road (speed limit 80 km/h) and Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way (speed limit 60 km/h).

Meanwhile, the e-police sites monitoring traffic violations are situated at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road.
Osiyemi emphasised that the initiative aims to reduce road accidents caused by overspeeding and other traffic violations.
He also mentioned that enforcement would begin immediately, with violators receiving SMS notifications detailing the violation and corresponding fines.
“It is important to also note that enforcement will commence immediately. Motorists who violate traffic laws as detected by the ITS will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service department, detailing the nature of the violation and the corresponding fines to be paid,” Osiyemi said.
The goal of the new system, he clarified, is not to be punitive but to encourage responsible driving, ultimately aiming to save lives, protect property, and maintain order on Lagos roads.
The briefing was attended by key government officials, including representatives from Huawei Technologies and the Ministry of Transportation.
