Lagos State Holds ‘Eko Men Walk’ to Raise Awareness on Sexual Violence

Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has continued its September Awareness Month with an advocacy event named ‘Eko Men Walk,’ aimed at addressing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

The walk, held in Ajegunle, Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area, was part of this year’s awareness campaign themed “SGBV? Not On My Watch!” Over 500 participants took part in the walk, distributing informational flyers to local residents.

Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of DSVA, explained that the ‘Eko Men Walk’ initiative is designed to engage men in conversations about SGBV and to educate them on how they can influence their peers and support women affected by violence. The campaign also aims to inform the public about reporting mechanisms and reinforce the state government’s zero tolerance for SGBV.

Vivour-Adeniyi noted that the event’s focus on Ajegunle is due to a recent rise in domestic violence cases, including troubling incidents of child abuse and sexual violence. She highlighted two specific cases where children were severely abused, resulting in their removal from their homes and placement in protective care.

The agency has seen an increase in informal reports of abuse, reflecting the success of its awareness efforts. The DSVA is working to reduce SGBV to the barest minimum and emphasises the collective responsibility needed to tackle this issue.

Mr Lucky Uduikhue, Deputy Chairman of Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State government for spearheading the initiative and assured that the information will be disseminated throughout the community.

Local residents praised the initiative, acknowledging the growing problem of violence in the area. They expressed appreciation for the government’s intervention, which they believe will help to foster stronger, violence-free families within the community.
