Lagos State Issues Warning on the Storage of Combustible Materials

The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to residents regarding the improper handling and storage of combustible materials, especially during the ongoing harmattan season and beyond.

Residents are urged to be vigilant about their surroundings and report individuals storing hazardous items that could pose a threat to the safety of the community to the appropriate authorities.

Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde, the state’s commissioner for special duties and intergovernmental relations, emphasised that the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu is deeply committed to ensuring the safety of lives and protecting citizens from potential hazards.

Oyerinde pointed out the importance of alerting the public to the necessity of being more safety-conscious. He highlighted the significant risks associated with the transportation and handling of combustible materials, fuels, chemicals, and other dangerous substances, emphasising that these risks could result in substantial loss of lives, property damage, and legal consequences.

Mr. Lanre Mojola, the Director General of the Safety Commission, emphasised that the value of human lives is immeasurable, underscoring the proactive measures needed to safeguard lives and property. The Safety Commission has initiated the ‘Safety For You’ campaign, focusing on raising awareness and promoting safety measures in personal, occupational, and business contexts.

Mojola emphasised the potential dangers of stockpiling chemicals and combustibles, citing the risk of explosions and fire outbreaks under extreme temperatures and pressure. He urged the public to prioritise safety and take responsibility, encouraging individuals to report any suspicious activities. “When you see something, please say something. An injury to one is an injury to all.”

The Commission’s officers are actively conducting safety inspections to ensure that all environments are secure. Mojola also advised artisans and tradesmen to seek professional advice on handling combustible goods and transporting them within the state.

In addition, the public is urged to report any stockpiles of dangerous goods by contacting 07000SAFETY or reaching out to the nearest security agencies. Vigilance and collective responsibility are emphasised to ensure the well-being of everyone in the community.
