Lagos State will begin the removal of illegal stalls obstructing public infrastructure in the Lagos Island area starting Monday, following the expiration of a 48-hour notice issued by the Ministry of Environment. The notice, which was served last Thursday, forms part of the government’s effort to clear the area for urban regeneration.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment, confirmed the enforcement process will begin promptly. During a tour of the Oke Arin area, Wahab assured that the statutory requirements had been met and emphasised that by Tuesday, the full removal of the illegal stalls blocking public infrastructure would commence.
The crackdown primarily affects traders operating under the Apogbon Bridge and those with illegal stalls on drainage setbacks. Wahab also expressed concern about contractors who leave building materials on roads and drainage systems, which he said harms public infrastructure and leads to avoidable challenges.
Wahab warned that contractors who fail to comply would face consequences, stressing the importance of keeping public spaces clear for the benefit of all residents. He reiterated that the government’s commitment to the urban regeneration project was about ensuring the preservation of public infrastructure, free from emotional or sentimental considerations.
