The Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced that six additional train sets will shortly arrive in Lagos, increasing the Lagos Rail Mass Transit’s (LRMT) capacity.
This was confirmed by Kolawole Ojelabi, Head of Corporate Communication at LAMATA, in a statement issued on Friday.
“The trains will run on the Blue and Red Lines to give commuters value and boost the state’s economic viability,” he said.
The LRMT Blue and Red Lines will both use the six train sets that passed the manufacturer acceptance test, which will be transported from China to Lagos, according to Ojelabi.
He claims that after phase two of the Blue Line is finished, the train sets will be added to the rolling stock, increasing the number of train journeys along the route and being used for passenger operations to Okokomaiko.
According to him, passenger operations will soon be extended to Okokomaiko once the 14-kilometer Blue Line Rail phase two construction from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko is finished in the first quarter of 2027.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari launched the completion of the infrastructure for the first phase of the Blue Line, a 13-kilometer rail link from Marina to Mile 2, on January 23, 2023. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu then opened the line to passengers on September 4, 2023.
With the purchase of three more rolling stock, the Blue Line’s daily trip count is anticipated to rise from its present 72 excursions.
At the moment, the Red Line makes eight daily trips. Also, the acquisition of new rolling stock will guarantee more journeys every day.
