In Kasese, in western Uganda, landslides brought on by heavy rain have killed at least 15 people, including women and children.

Flood waters ripped across the region at the foot of the Rwenzori mountains, destroying some homes as they went.

Six persons were hurt, according to a Uganda Red Cross official, in the landslides that occurred in Rukoki after the intense downpour. Unknown numbers of people are believed to be missing.

Three individuals were murdered last week in the landslide-prone area’s Bundibugyo district. Parts of the country have been devastated this year by the rainy season, which typically begins in August. At least 24 people died early last month when rivers in eastern Uganda burst their banks.

This year, extreme weather has affected a number of regions of East Africa, ranging from prolonged droughts to destructive storms and flooding.
