The African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa has voted against a motion to investigate suspected widespread corruption at the state power company Eskom.

During the country’s electricity crisis, the state utility company has been at the centre of rampant corruption allegations involving top ANC officials.

A total of 201 ANC members voted against the proposal, while 115 opposition members voted in favour.

The governing party lawmakers contended that the parliament’s oversight mechanism and the appointment of an electricity minister were sufficient to address all issues.

The resolution was introduced by the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA). South Africa has been dealing with a power problem, with scheduled power outages lasting up to 12 hours in recent weeks.
