Hours after their arrest by the Police at the #OccupyLekkiTollgate protest, popular Nigerian comedian, Debo Adebayo a.k.a Mr Macaroni and thirty-nine other protesters have been granted bail.
Mr Macaroni and tens of other protesters were held by the Police and were forced to face dehumanising conditions in a security vehicle owned by the Lekki Concession Company (LCC).
A statement by the Lagos Police Command said that forty “suspects” were arrested at the toll gate plaza on Saturday for ‘conspiracy, conduct likely to cause breach of peace and violation of COVID-19 protocols.’
The Police accused the peaceful protesters of creating tension and behaving in a manner that may lead to violence.
The protesters were arraigned at the mobile court at Panti, Yaba, Lagos State and were granted bail by the court.
Nigerians have decried the arrest of the vocal comedians and others held by the Police as the conduct of the security agents was dubbed an abuse of the constitutional rights of the people.
#OccupyLekkiTollGate trended on Twitter on Saturday with global stars like Rihanna and Lukas Graham also lending a word to the movement.
