Liberian Former Vice-President Boakai Joins Presidential Race

Opposition Party in Liberia Picks Boakai as Its Presidential Candidate (News Central TV)

Former Vice-President Joseph Boakai has been selected by Liberia‘s opposition Unity Party as their candidate in the upcoming presidential elections.

Boakai, 77, won the party’s convention over the weekend without any challengers. From 2006 to 2017, he served as the former president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf‘s deputy.

After falling short against President George Weah in the 2017 general election, Boakai will attempt to win the president once more.

In 2016, Boakai announced his intention to run for the Liberian presidency in the 2017 general election. He is viewed by many as a safe and uncorrupt candidate.

The president is expected to seek re-election for a second term. But Boakai told newsmen that he was confident of defeating the former footballer saying; “I have the track record, I have the integrity, I have the experience. I have been tested, I have worked over the years with huge credibility”.

He added: “Liberians are looking for someone that can redeem this country, and they can think of nobody else but me. I am prepared to do so, I know I am capable of helping to restore the dignity of this country.”
