Liberian President Joseph Boakai has announced a voluntary 40% reduction in his salary, a move the government says is intended to demonstrate leadership by example and promote government accountability.
This announcement came after some lawmakers arrived at parliament in tricycles, known locally as ‘Keke,’ to protest the Finance Ministry’s refusal to disburse funds for vehicle acquisition.
The Liberian Leader stressed that he intends to set a precedent for responsible governance and nation-building and to show solidarity with the people in the face of a struggling economy.
President Boakai not only volunteered himself for a pay cut but also promised to strengthen the Civil Service Agency (CSA) to ensure that public servants’ salaries match the current economic conditions and fairly compensate them for their hard work.
He added that he is dedicated to promoting financial responsibility and fair compensation across all public service sectors to foster a culture of fairness and accountability within the government.
