According to a government announcement made early on Saturday, Richelieu Archibald Williams, Liberia’s Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco, has passed away.
The announcement signed by Antoinette Wollo, acting chief of protocol for Liberia, Williams, who had been bedridden for a considerable amount of time, passed away in the Moroccan Military Teaching Hospital in the country’s capital city of Rabat.
“The Government of the Republic of Liberia announces with deep regret the death of His Excellency Richelieu Archibald Williams, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Liberia to the Kingdom of Morocco.
“This sad and mournful event occurred at L’Hôpital Militaire d’Instruction Mohammed V, Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco on Friday, January 13, 2023 after a period of illness,” the release said.
Williams, a native of Maryland County, was appointed by the previous president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on November 30, 2017, and transferred to Rabat. She was one of his favorite government employees at the moment, and he said that deciding to send him away was painful, but it had to be done.
“We are taking one of our favorite people to be our ambassador,” she said, urging to build and strengthen strong ties that will lead to closer cooperation and promote bilateral ties with the Kingdom of Morocco.
She described him as an institutional person, manifested by his performance wherever he served.
Williams worked for the Sirleaf administration for a number of years as Director General of the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority before being chosen by the President Sirleaf for the ambassadorship to Morocco (LCAA). Additionally, Roberts International Airport (RIA), widely regarded as Liberia’s top airport, nominated him as acting director. He held both of these positions at once.
The government entrusted him with the duty of guaranteeing prompt implementation of emergency repair works being carried out on the airport’s runway, taxiway, and apron due to his “extensive experience.”
The funeral plans for the deceased Liberian diplomat, according to the government’s statement on Saturday, would be revealed later.
