Most Libyan leaders are calling for an inclusive political process and an end to unilateral actions in the country, according to the new Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya, Hanna Tetteh.

Speaking at the UN Security Council on Thursday, Tetteh said there is a growing consensus on the need to unify national institutions and restore stability. However, she acknowledged that opinions remain divided on the best path forward.

“Some believe a new unified government is the only solution, while others argue it will prolong the nearly 15-year transition period,” she stated.

Following consultations with Libyan leaders, political parties, and civil society actors, Tetteh affirmed her commitment to maintaining an inclusive stakeholder approach.

She emphasised that any outcome must be Libyan-owned and enjoy broad support across the country.

Also addressing the Council, Libyan Ambassador Taher M. El-Sonni expressed backing for national processes aimed at achieving consensus.

He urged that such efforts should not be undermined or called into question.
