Sierra Leonean football fans have welcomed the return of league football to the country after a four-and-a-half-year absence.

Thousands of fans arrived several hours before kick-off to see the country’s two best supported teams, Mighty Blackpool and East End Lions, play each other despite Sierra Leone’s suspension by world football’s governing body FIFA.

Football was suspended due to the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in 2014 and further wrangles within the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) meant the league was unable to resume.
