Lookman's Atalanta Frustrated by Celtic in Goalless Champions League Draw

Atalanta were left frustrated by a determined Celtic as the two sides played out a goalless draw on a rainy Wednesday night in Bergamo during their Champions League clash.

Celtic’s goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel, delivered an outstanding performance, keeping the Italian side at bay throughout the match, particularly during a frantic first half at the Gewiss Stadium. Despite Atalanta’s relentless pressure and numerous chances, they were unable to break Celtic’s defensive resilience.

The draw moves Celtic up to 18th place with four points in the new Champions League single-league format, while Atalanta sit 12th on five points, remaining unbeaten.

After suffering a 7-1 humiliation against Borussia Dortmund in their last match, Celtic showed a marked improvement in their defensive organisation and were rewarded with a hard-fought point.

Atalanta dominated the first half, creating several clear-cut chances, most of which fell to Mario Pasalic. The Croatian midfielder came close to scoring in the 18th minute, heading the ball onto the crossbar and narrowly missing the rebound. Six minutes later, Schmeichel blocked Pasalic’s low effort, and Davide Zappacosta squandered another opportunity, blasting over from the penalty spot.

Schmeichel continued his heroics, making a brilliant save from Mateo Retegui’s header just before halftime to keep the score level.

Celtic, although under constant pressure, had a rare opportunity to snatch a goal when Alex Valle’s deflected shot was tipped over the bar by Marco Carnesecchi early in the second half.

However, the Scottish side spent the majority of the match defending deep, holding firm against Atalanta’s relentless attack. Despite their dominance, Atalanta couldn’t find the breakthrough and were forced to settle for a point.
