French President Emmanuel Macron has advocated for a restructured Palestinian Authority, proposing it govern Gaza after the conflict, excluding Hamas.
France supports the idea of the West Bank-based Authority regaining control of Gaza, ending Hamas’s nearly 20-year rule.
Following a discussion with Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas, Macron stated on X that disarming and removing Hamas, establishing reliable governance, and reforming the Palestinian Authority are crucial for a post-war framework.

He linked these steps to progress towards a two-state solution, aiming for a peace conference in June.
Macron’s recent suggestion that France might recognise a Palestinian state at a UN conference in June has drawn criticism from Israel.
Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007, displacing the Palestinian Authority. Both France and the US have called for the Authority, which has limited power in parts of the West Bank, to combat corruption and introduce new leadership to prepare for governing Gaza.
The Palestinian Authority, led by Abbas, faces challenges due to Israel’s occupation and the president’s low approval ratings.
