Herbs Gone Wrong: Madagascar Converts Schools Into Hospitals

Madagascar has turned schools and hotels into hospitals as Coronavirus surges in the indian ocean country.

The spike is attributed to the South Africa variant which has caused a second wave in Madagascar

Most Hospitals and makeshift treatment centres are overwhelmed.

To curb the increased spread of the virus, schools and hotels in Madagascar are being transformed into hospitals

President Andry Rajoelina had earlier strongly opposed Covid vaccines and stood by a locally made herbal infusion as a cure. Only after fierce criticism did the government make a u-turn to sign up for the global Covax programme.

According to the country’s Health Minister, Jean-Louis Rakotovao, there have been discussions, exchanges with Malagasy scientists and the country finally settled for vaccines.

Madagascar, an island of about 27million inhabitants, has recorded more than 24,600 Coronavirus cases, including at least 433 deaths.
