Real Madrid’s women’s squad secured their maiden victory against Liga F champions Barcelona with an unexpected 3-1 away win on Sunday at the Olympic stadium.

Pere Romeu’s Barcelona continues to lead the standings, sitting four points ahead of second-place Madrid after suffering their second league loss this season amidst rainy and hailing conditions in front of nearly 36,000 spectators.

Barcelona has dominated the Spanish top division for five consecutive years, celebrating a quadruple last season.

However, their performance this season has not matched their previous successes, especially after a 46-match unbeaten streak in Liga F was broken by Levante in February, marking their first domestic defeat at the Johan Cruyff stadium.

The women’s team for Real Madrid was established in 2020 after taking over CD Tacon, which was set up in 2014.

Alba Redondo put Madrid in the lead just before the halftime whistle, but Caroline Graham Hansen equalized for Barcelona in the 67th minute.

Jana Fernandez scored for Barcelona, but the goal was controversially ruled out for offside, despite appearing legitimate — and without VAR available in Liga F, the call remained unchanged.

Real Madrid’s Scottish forward Caroline Weir propelled the visitors ahead in the 87th minute and added another goal in stoppage time, sealing a memorable victory.

Real Madrid will face Arsenal in the women’s Champions League on Wednesday, holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg of the quarter-finals, while Barcelona will take on Wolfsburg on Thursday, leading 4-1.
