Former Real Madrid player Xabi Alonso will leave his role at Bayer Leverkusen in a few weeks to join Real Madrid and succeed the legendary Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, who also had a brief tenure as coach at Bayern Munich.

On Friday, Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso announced his intention to leave the club at the end of the season, amidst speculation linking him to the  Spanish club.

Alonso stated it was “the appropriate time” to reveal his departure but did not disclose his next position, saying it was “unsuitable to discuss too much about the future.”

During his time at the club, Alonso transformed Bayer Leverkusen from an underdog into a formidable force, achieving a Bundesliga championship and a DFB-Pokal title in the 2023/24 season.

Alonso was also rumoured to be a contender for the Bayern Munich vacancy last summer before choosing to remain with Leverkusen, with the Bavarian giants hiring Vincent Kompany.
