Aymen Mahious scored the game-winning goal as Algeria advanced to the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) by defeating Ethiopia 1-0 on Tuesday. The hosts won the match in front of a raucous 40,000-strong crowd at Algiers’ Stade Nelson Mandela, thanks to a 52nd-minute goal from the striker.
Ethiopia failed to mark Mahious at a corner, and he controlled the ball with his chest before poking it into goalkeeper Fasil Gebremichael’s hands. Last Friday, Mahious scored the sole goal, a penalty, when Algeria defeated Libya in the first match of a tournament limited to footballers who play for clubs in their country of birth.
Algeria has six points in Group A after two victories, Mozambique has four, Ethiopia has one, and Libya has none. Mozambique scored three goals in 10 minutes to defeat Libya 3-2 in the first match of a doubleheader.
On Saturday, Algeria will face Mozambique in Algiers, while Ethiopia will face Libya in the eastern coastal city of Annaba.
