Algerian international, Riyad Mahrez, has contracted the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The Manchester City player and fellow teammate, Aymeric Laporte, both tested positive to the virus and will spend a period in self-isolation, as per government guidelines.
Manchester City confirmed both players virus statuses in a statement on Monday.
“Manchester City FC can confirm that Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte have tested positive for Covid-19,” the Premier League club said.
“Both players are currently observing a period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine. Neither is displaying symptoms of the virus.
“Everyone at the Club wishes Riyad and Aymeric a speedy recovery ahead of their return to training and the new season.”
Mahrez played 50 times for City last season, scoring 13 goals and adding 16 assists.
Manchester City will play their first match of the new season with a visit to Wolverhampton’s Molineux Stadium on Monday, 21 September.
Their home clash against Aston Villa, due to be played this weekend, was postponed to allow City extra time off following their Champions League commitments which kept them playing competitive football until last month.
