The Lagos state government has reopened the Odo Iya Alaro Bridge in the Maryland area after it was temporarily closed for less than two months.
Transport Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi announced the news in a statement on Monday. The statement disclosed that the state Ministry of Works carried out the rehabilitation starting on July 22, 2024.
According to Osiyemi, the rehabilitation’s goal was to improve movement and traffic flow between the Mainland and the Island.
Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat officially reopened the Odo Iya Alaro Bridge ahead of schedule, despite the initial 90-day project being completed in under two months due to the exceptional dedication of all involved.
The successful reopening is attributed to the collaborative efforts of the Lagos State Government, with the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Transportation playing crucial roles.
The Ministry of Works provided oversight and technical support to ensure high standards and quality in the rehabilitation work. At the same time, the Ministry of Transportation coordinated traffic management and logistics for an efficient execution.
Lagosians were thanked for their patience and cooperation during the closure, adding that their support and adaptability in navigating alternative routes were crucial to the project’s success.
The reopening of the Odo Iya Alaro Bridge is a significant milestone in enhancing the city’s infrastructure, promising improved traffic flow and connectivity between the Mainland and the Island. The outstanding role of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in managing traffic during the project was also commended.
