According to authorities, on Thursday, a 24-year-old fresh graduate from Makerere University was discovered dead hanging in a church in the western Ugandan district of Rwampara.
It was believed that Flavia Nagasha hanged herself; her body was discovered inside Kagarama Daystar Church at around 4 o’clock in the afternoon.
According to a local leader in the area, Flavia allegedly hanged herself with a rope that church officials had tied around her before the exorcism.
“The deceased was a resident of my cell but died in Ngarama Cell, Nyabikungu Parish. She had been coming to the church for prayers for about two months,” said Alex Kwoshaba, a leader in the neighboring Butahe Village in Rugando Sub County.
According to Rwampara OC/CID Clare Arinaitwe, “Nagasha climbed drums to suspend her corpse on the roof at the centre of the church, where her late mother regularly led her for prayers.”
Her body was discovered at around 4 p.m. by a man who aimed to shelter from the rain at the church.
Nagasha was said to suffer from mental retardation.
“Due to her mental health issues, the deceased even missed her graduation day and frequently sought exorcism,” an anonymous friend said.
Also speaking on the issue, Phionah Nimusiima said, “After the exams at Makerere University, Nagasha was sick. She was receiving treatment when doctors told us she had a mental health issue. She seemed okay two days ago, but yesterday, her body was discovered.”
