Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera named Michael Usi as his vice president on Thursday, following the death of former Vice President Saulos Chilima who was killed in an airplane crash last week.
Chilima and nine others lost their lives when the military plane they were travelling in crashed as it was on its way back to the capital Lilongwe on June 10.
Usi will be sworn into office on Friday, a government statement said.
He previously served as Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change as well as Tourism, Culture and Wildlife.
The 55-year-old was a close ally of Chilima having been his running mate in a previous presidential election.
