Malawian footballer Temwa Chawinga has emerged as the top female goalscorer for 2023, surpassing renowned players such as Australia’s Sam Kerr and Germany’s Alexandra Popp.
The prestigious award was bestowed upon Chawinga by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) on Monday.
IFFHS reported that Chawinga netted an impressive 63 goals last year, showcasing her scoring prowess for both the Malawian national team and the Chinese club Wuhan Jiangda.
Zambian players Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji also secured places in the top 10 rankings.
Adding to the family’s football achievements, Temwa Chawinga’s older sister, Tabitha, claimed the 25th spot on the list. Tabitha Chawinga, who played for Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain in the past year, contributed to the success of both her club teams and the Malawian national squad.
The IFFHS, known for its rankings since 1984, recognises outstanding performances and achievements in international football.
