The Regional Governor of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the Northern Region, Christopher Mzomera Ngwira, has stated that if former President Peter Mutharika chooses to run again, the Northern Region will support him. Ngwira made the comments during a party meeting in Mzuzu on Saturday.
According to Ngwira, party members in the Northern Region desire Mutharika to represent the DPP in the upcoming presidential elections in 2025. The Voice of Livingstonia Radio stated that Ngwira told the meeting that if Mutharika chooses to contest on the DPP ticket, the Northern Region will support him entirely.
“We will not accept another candidate to compete against Mutharika at the Party’s convention, but we will all rally behind him,” Ngwira declared.
Mutharika recently disclosed in an interview that he would decide whether to run for office again before the DPP convention in July this year. DPP Vice President for the Northern Region, Goodall Gondwe, also addressed the meeting at the weekend, emphasising the importance of unity among party members to secure a victory in the 2025 election.
“We need to work with discipline and unity because these are crucial for us to remain on course to forming the next government come 2025,” Gondwe remarked.
