Authorities in Mali have arrested a prominent radio presenter and political activist in Mali, Mohamed Youssouf Bathily, popularly known as Ras Bath for suggesting that a former prime minister who died last year in prison was assassinated.
Ras Bath faces charges including disturbing public order after he made the remarks about the late prime minister, Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga, at a political meeting on Saturday.
There have been calls for Mali’s military government to allow an investigation into Maiga’s death, however, videos of Ras Bath’s speech have been widely shared online.
He was an ally of the former president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who was toppled three years ago.
