Mali’s military government appointed General Abdoulaye Maiga as the new prime minister on Thursday following the dismissal of civilian premier Choguel Kokalla Maiga a day earlier for public criticism of the military leadership.
Until this appointment, Maiga had been serving as the government spokesperson.
Since the military took control after a series of coups in 2020 and 2021, Mali has been grappling with issues related to terrorism and insurgency.
A decree announcing Major General Abdoulaye Maiga’s appointment as prime minister was issued by junta leader General Assimi Goita and broadcast on the state television channel ORTM by the presidency’s secretary general.
Although Abdoulaye Maiga was not part of the initial group of colonels that deposed the civilian president in August 2020, he swiftly aligned himself with them afterwards.
