The National Workers’ Union of Mali (UNTM) will from Monday, 14 December 2020 embark on a five-day industrial action after failed negotiations between it and the government.
UNTM, the country’s largest trade-union, in a statement on Friday, said it called the action to demand improved working and living conditions for workers.
The union also called for a standardized wage packet system.
Should the strike go ahead, associated demonstrations are possible outside government buildings in cities and towns across the south and centre of the country, particularly in Bamako.
“The executive board of the Malian national workers’ union informs workers, as well as the citizens of the beginning of a strike from 14 to 18 December 2020,” the union said in a statement.
On 18-20 November 2019, the UNTM launched a 72-hour strike, largely observed across the country, for the same demands.
According to estimates, the three-day strike cost the Malian government 7 billion CFAF.
