Mamelodi Sundowns extended their lead at the top of the South African Premiership with a commanding 4-0 victory over Golden Arrows on Sunday, their biggest league win of the season. The result came just a day after Orlando Pirates edged Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in a dramatic Soweto derby, courtesy of a stoppage-time penalty from Patrick Maswanganyi.
Namibian international Peter Shalulile, who came off the bench in the first half, proved instrumental in Sundowns’ dominant performance. He won a penalty after being fouled by Arrows’ goalkeeper Ismail Watenga, allowing Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro to open the scoring and take his tally to a league-best seven goals. Shalulile then netted twice in the second half before Teboho Mokoena sealed the rout in the 85th minute.

With the win, defending champions Sundowns remain six points clear of Pirates, although they have played one game more. The two title contenders will clash in a highly anticipated mid-season showdown in Pretoria on Saturday.
Pirates, seeking their first league title since 2012, secured their derby victory in front of 90,000 fans at Johannesburg’s national stadium. Maswanganyi, holding his nerve in the 96th minute, executed a ‘Panenka’ penalty to clinch his first league goal of the campaign. The win marked Pirates’ fourth consecutive triumph over Chiefs, reaffirming their dominance in the historic rivalry.
