Man City land WSL Record Scorer Miedema on Free Transfer

Manchester City have signed former Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema on a free transfer after her contract expired at the end of June.

The 27-year-old is the all-time leading goalscorer in the Women’s Super League, including 125 goals for Arsenal, which decided against offering her a new contract after having just eight starts over the past two seasons due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

She has now signed a three-year deal with the Manchester club.

“I chose City because they have the same ambitions as me – they want to win the league and titles,” said Miedema.

“I haven’t played as much football as I would have wished over the past two years, but I think and hope my best years are still to come. I hope I will be able to help the team as much as I can.

“In the end, it was an easy choice for me. I want to challenge myself every day in training and every week in the games we play.” She said.

She is regarded as one of the greatest players in WSL history. At 27, albeit still recovering fully from her ACL injury, many feel she can still find her rhythm again, and it was surprising that Arsenal didn’t try to keep her.

City already has a strong lineup of attackers, including Khadija Shaw, who won the Golden Boot last season, and Lauren Hemp, who plays for the England national team.

However, they narrowly missed out on the WSL title on the final day of the 2023-24 season due to a goal difference, and naturally, they looked to add more firepower to their attack.
