Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has expressed frustration over a difficult season, attributing his struggles to a mix of off-field issues and fitness setbacks. The 24-year-old England international, who was last season’s Premier League Player of the Year, has found himself on the fringes this campaign amid City’s uncharacteristic trophy drought.
City, who are on course to finish the season without a major trophy for the first time since 2016/17, still require a point in their final Premier League game to secure Champions League qualification. Foden was notably left on the bench for the FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace last weekend.
“It’s been a frustrating season for me,” Foden admitted. “I’ve had a lot of things going on off the pitch mentally. Sometimes there’s things in life bigger than football and this season I’ve struggled a little bit. Hopefully next year I can get my head right mentally and get back to where I was last season because I know what I’m capable of.”

Earlier this year, Foden revealed he was dealing with both physical and mental challenges. His manager, Pep Guardiola, publicly supported him after Foden was subjected to personal taunts during a match against Manchester United.
“I know if everything was OK I would definitely be better on the field,” Foden said. “Sometimes things happen, and you have to deal with it and move on. I’ve had a difficult season but I’m improving and getting back to my best. I know my standards and what I can be, so I’m looking forward to getting back.”
As City prepare to travel for the expanded Club World Cup following their final Premier League fixture, Foden remains uncertain about his participation due to an ongoing ankle injury. He will discuss with club and England team staff whether resting to fully recover might be the best option.
