China, on Monday, carried out the execution of a man responsible for killing 35 individuals in a car attack that took place in the southern city of Zhuhai last November, marking the deadliest mass incident in the country in several years.
On November 11, Fan Weiqiu, 62, intentionally drove a small SUV into groups of people who were exercising outside a sports complex, leading to 45 injuries in what is regarded as China’s worst such incident since 2014.
Last month, he received a death sentence, with the court stating that his motives were “extremely vile, (and) the nature of the crime extremely egregious.”
State broadcaster CCTV reported on Monday that a court in Zhuhai “executed Fan Weiqiu in accordance with the execution order issued by the Supreme People’s Court.”
According to CCTV, the municipal public prosecutor “sent personnel to oversee the execution in compliance with the law.”
Fan’s attack resulted in widespread public horror in China regarding societal conditions. He was apprehended at the scene with self-inflicted knife wounds and subsequently fell into a coma, as stated by police at that time.
During his trial last month, Fan admitted his guilt in the presence of some victims’ family members, officials, and members of the public, according to state media.
The court determined that he “chose to express his anger” regarding “a failed marriage, personal frustrations, and dissatisfaction related to property division following divorce.”
It concluded that the methods employed were “particularly cruel, and the consequences particularly severe, causing significant harm to society.”
