Manchester United has activated a one-year extension in Erik ten Hag’s contract, securing his position at the club until 2026. The Dutchman, who came to Old Trafford from Ajax, had initially signed a deal to end in 2025.
The 54-year-old has already won two trophies in his two years at the club, and the new investor, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, decided to stick with him after an FA Cup win turned around a dismal season.
“I am very pleased to have reached an agreement with the club to continue working together,” said the Dutchman.
“Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined.” He added.
In his debut season at the club, Ten Hag led United to a third-place finish in the Premier League and broke a six-year trophy drought by clinching the Carabao Cup with a win against Newcastle.
However, the second season proved more challenging, with United faltering to an eighth-place finish in the league and an early exit from the Champions League group stages.
A 2-1 victory against Manchester City in May’s FA Cup final proved vital to Ten Hag staying on, despite Ratcliffe speaking to other managers.
Since taking a 27.7% stake in the club, Ratcliffe has overhauled its board structure and is in talks with the manager to overhaul his backroom staff.
Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who served as PSV Eindhoven’s manager from 2022 to 2023, is anticipated to make a comeback to Old Trafford as part of a restructured coaching team, joining forces with Go Ahead Eagles manager Rene Hake.
