In response to the protracted conflict between the communities of Umuobor-Akaeze and Ogwor-Ishiagu in Ivo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Governor Francis Nwifuru has declared the disputed land a buffer zone.
The two neighbouring communities have been embroiled in clashes over a fertile piece of land, known as Elueke, for more than five decades. These hostilities have resulted in numerous fatalities and the destruction of properties worth millions of naira.
The conflict recently escalated, with reports of multiple casualties. A truck driver from Imo State, travelling along the busy Akaeze/Ishiagu expressway linking the two communities, was killed near the Ayaragu axis after suspected armed groups blocked the road.
On Wednesday, the violence claimed the lives of four people, including a man and his son, while two decomposing bodies were also discovered.
Government Directive
In a statement issued by Grace Umezurike, Secretary to the State Government, Governor Nwifuru ordered both communities to vacate the disputed land immediately. He warned that anyone found on the land would face legal consequences.
The statement, released on Thursday and obtained by Channels Television, also instructed security agencies to bolster their presence in the area to enforce the directive and maintain law and order.
Stakeholder Engagement
As part of efforts to resolve the crisis, the governor has summoned 20 stakeholders from each community to attend a crucial meeting aimed at finding a lasting solution to the long-standing dispute.
The government remains committed to ensuring peace and stability in the affected region.
