Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday that the company plans to invest at least $60 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) in 2025, positioning itself as a leader in the field.
In a post on his Facebook page, Zuckerberg called this year a “defining year for AI” and outlined the company’s ambitions to develop the top digital assistant, Meta AI, which is expected to be used by over a billion people.
The company is also planning to lead AI model development with its Llama 4, alongside creating an AI “engineer” to assist with coding in its research and development.
Additionally, Meta will invest in building a new, massive data centre to support its AI operations. The expected capital expenditures for AI-related initiatives in 2025 will range between $60 billion and $65 billion.
Zuckerberg described this as a significant effort that would drive innovation, power Meta’s core products, and bolster American technological leadership.
This announcement comes shortly after US President Donald Trump revealed a $500 billion AI infrastructure project led by SoftBank and OpenAI.
However, Trump’s ally Elon Musk expressed scepticism about the project’s financial backing.
Meanwhile, Microsoft president Brad Smith highlighted that his company is on track to invest around $80 billion in AI data centres, model training, and global cloud applications.
