The 59th edition of Mashujaa Day kicked off on a celebratory note at Uhuru Gardens National Monument and Museum in Nairobi on Thursday. Presided over by President William Ruto, who is hosting his first national day celebration.
Among dignitaries gracing the celebrations are Chief Justice Martha Koome, Parliament Speakers Moses Wetangula and Amason Kingi.
Firebrand activist and barrister Miguna Miguna who arrived the country after nearly five years in exile and several court-backed pronouncements is also in attendance.
Cabinet Secretaries Professor George Magoha (Education), Farida Karoney (Lands), Raychelle Omamo (Foreign Affairs) and Najib Balala (Tourism) also graced the occasion.
Kenya’s Heroes’ Day otherwise known as ‘Mashujaa Day’ honours heroes who supported the country’s struggle for independence.
It was renamed after the initial Kenyatta Day name was changed following the coming into force of the Constitution (2010) to acknowledge the contribution of all independence fighters.
It is also an opportunity for government to honour post-independence heroes who have imparted national development in several sphere
