Mauritania’s Foreign Minister Ismael Ould Cheikh Ahmed is expected to meet with his Moroccan counterpart for the opening of a new Mauritanian mission building in Rabat.
According to diplomatic sources, Cheikh Ahmed will arrive in the capital on an official visit on Tuesday.
Ahmed is expected to meet with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, in addition to presiding over the ceremony of laying the foundation stone for the construction of the Mauritanian diplomatic complex in Rabat.
The diplomatic complex of Nouakchott in Rabat, located in the Souissi district, will be constructed on an area of 5,000 square meters.
On September 19, Bourita held a phone conversation with his Mauritanian counterpart to review bilateral ties between the two North African neighbours.
The two officials expressed mutual satisfaction with the state of relations and cooperation between the two countries.
The ministers discussed the importance of intensifying lasting contacts and consultations to serve the common interests of Morocco and Mauritania.
Over time, both countries have repeatedly expressed determination to boost ties across different industries, including trade and diplomatic cooperation.
The call came after the official visit of Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra to Nouakchott, in the wake of reports in the Mauritanian media of plans for a summit in Algiers between Presidents Mohamed Cheikh Ould El Ghazouani and Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Observers believe that there might be some attempt by Mauritania to mediate the diplomatic tensions between Morocco and Algeria.
A week after the operation of the Royal Armed Forces in Guerguerat back on November 13, King Mohammed VI called Mauritanian president Ould El Ghazouani to express his “readiness to make an official visit to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania”
