Mauritius 2022 President Uhuru Kenyatta Commends Team Kenya (News Central TV)

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has commended Team Kenya for their sterling performance at the just concluded 22nd African Senior Athletics Championships held at the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex, Saint Pierre, Mauritius.

Team Kenya finished top of the medals table, for the fifth time, with 10 gold medals, 5 silver and 8 bronze medals.

The championships saw Kenyan sprinting ace Ferdinand Omanyala win the 100M Championship, defeating South Africa’s Akani Simbine with a time of 9.93s.

Others Kenyan gold winners with impressive feat include 10,000 metres lead, Caroline Nyaga; 5000 metres winner Beatrice Chebet; 1500 metres finisher Winny Chebet

South Africa had the biggest delegation with a contingent of 90 athletes. It had more women (47) than men (43), and thus coming close to a near parity in its squad.

The smallest delegation were Mauritania and Burundi with each a team made up of only one athlete, namely the Mauritanian Serigne Salio Dia (100m) and the Burundian Bienvenu Wendlasida Sawadogo (400m hurdles).

President Kenyatta termed the topping of the Championship table for the fifth time, as a showcase of Kenya’s profile as an African athletics powerhouse and assured the team of the Government’s continued support.
